Porepunkah’s charming hillside winery Ringer Reef will have you sipping, dipping and, ummm, stretching into a downward dog.
The Location
Ringer Reef is perched on a hillside just on the edge of Porepunkah, about 6 kilometres from Bright on the Great Alpine Road. Don’t worry, it’s well signposted for drivers and cyclists, who can take a little detour off the cycle trail to (ahem) refuel.
The Story
This charming little winery is owned by Bruce and Annie, lovers of Italian wine and all things homemade. We’re told this is Bruce’s 45th vintage, though the winery itself has only been around for ten years.
The tasting list has a real Italian flavour – think Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano and other varietals you don’t see often enough elsewhere. But saying that, the winery is all about as local as it gets. The first time we stopped by, Annie was in her muddy boots working the garden. This time, we’re told she made the delicious sourdough baguette we dipped hungrily into the locally-made olive oil and dukkah.
The Clincher
The alpine view is pretty impressive, the Sangiovese is to die for, but it’s the homely vibe about the place that warms our cockles.
